  1. Shine

From the recording Shine

(A lot of this song was written in my head while commuting to and from New York City on a ferry boat. I like to call it my "hydro-metaphor.")

Lyrics

The river at night throws off the dark
But for the shine of towering lights
The moon rising up over cold water tide
Watching and wondering pacing the shoreline
She longs to be hear feel and see
Reflections of light given so honestly
Once patiently waiting now tragically fading

Do you never shine unless she is near you
Could anyone love you as much as she
How dark is too dark - How cold is too cold
She tries to warm you with her fire
While your own current is drifting you by her

The piles of signs that wait to be read
Foretelling disaster but showing up after
It’s already too late to get in her head
So many moving parts - can you find her face in that crowd
Don’t listen too carefully or you may hear
Distraction so faint that it hardly makes sound
The water still running but no sign of you coming

Settled down now the sky meets the waves
Of your unfortunate part
Less than sound in body and mind
It’s harder to pray on behalf of your broken-down heart
And now as clouds fill her eyes and you drift away so far
She cries come back from your darkness
She can’t tell where it ends and you start

But she could not rise through and beside you
If your surface had ever run dry
She tries to warm you with her fire
While your own current is drifting you by her
