From the recording On The Same Side

The most important line in this song is the one that repeats "you are not my enemy" - everything else is built around that. It's a pretty simple idea. There are not enough times when people step back and really try to understand where and why they are channeling negativity where it certainly doesn't belong.

I wrote this around the time that everything was just about wrapped up in the studio and so it became an eleventh hour addition to the project. Mike's deadline-inspired crash course mandolin part turned out to be one of my most favorite instrumental parts on the record.

Lyrics

You're a nice young lady born in Kentucky
And I believe you when you say you love me
But there is something that you should know of me
I'm from the Hatfield Clan
And though we're just a girl and a boy
You're a fourth generation named McCoy
And my family says I must destroy you
I don't understand

Long ago they argued wrong and right
That does not mean we share the same fight

You have no quarrel with me
Other's say you do
Those that came before you
You are not my enemy
If we look we'll find we're on the same side

This day is not what I expected
I spent most of it being disrespected
Confused ignored dismissed and rejected
I don't understand
Why even though you did nothing bad
I treated you terribly as if you had
This is one place where I shouldn't be mad
Or brush away your hand

All this day I argued wrong and right
That does not mean we share the same fight

You have no quarrel with me
It was just a bad day
I don't mean a thing I do or say
You are not my enemy
If we look we'll find we're on the same

Sides are chosen hearts are broken
Hatred has been blindly spoken
We need to open up our eyes
To see who we really hurt and why

I'm from a country at war today
You're just a kid who lives far away
There are those who think we have nothing to say
While you are in my land

And though we're just a girl and a boy
The grownups gave me a gun for a toy
And my family says I must destroy you
I don't understand

Even though they argue wrong and right
That does not mean we share the same fight
